Project Overview (in English):
In this project, fourth‑year students explore the Celts, who first settled in Britain around 800 BCE, and the Romans, who invaded in 43 CE under Emperor Claudius. They will examine:

Cultural Legacy:

  • Latin place‑names (e.g. “Cambridge” from Cantabrigia) survive to this day, as do many Roman roads that form the backbone of Britain’s modern highway network. From the Celtic language roots in names like “Avon” (river) to the ruins of Roman villas, the intertwining of both cultures shaped Britain’s art, governance and landscape.

Roman Conquest and Infrastructure:

  • The Celts lived in tribal communities led by chieftains. Renowned for their metalwork, they crafted torcs, swords and intricate jewelry decorated with spirals and knotwork. Druidic priests held both religious and judicial power, performing ceremonies in sacred groves.
